So, you want to plan a trip to Hawaii. There are lots of options to consider when planning your vacation and they may seem overwhelming. A good starting point might be to think about how you are planning to arrive in this tropical paradise. Since Hawaii is, after all, an island there are only two ways to get there: by sea or by air. When calculating time from California, your choice is between five hours in the air or five days by sea. Now, I know there’s a big difference in time, but a Hawaii cruise might be just the excitement and relaxation you’re looking for.

Depending on your preference of travel, a Hawaii cruise might sound much more appealing to you than traveling by plane. It is inevitable that every time you step onto an airplane, even if you did pay top dollar for first class, you find yourself in an overcrowded area, in close quarters with several hundred people, many who are possibly ill.

You probably do everything you can, short of jump off the plane, to pass the grueling five hours. Then once you’re off the plane you spend another hour or more enduring airport security and looking for your luggage before you even begin the trip to your hotel. Wow, doesn’t sound like a great way to start a relaxing vacation. And just think, you get to do it all over again at the end of your trip, too.

Now, visualize yourself heading to your departure point and arriving right at your hotel. No long security lines, no crowded planes. When you travel by ship on a Hawaii cruise it’s just like checking into your hotel and relaxing while you head to your destination. You can put your luggage in your room and head straight to the pool deck, enjoy a cocktail, and spend the first five hours of your vacation basking in the tropical sun rather than dodging someone else’s germs.

When it comes down to it there’s really no comparison. I know I would much rather spend my vacation to Hawaii relaxing on a cruise ship than wasting it in an airport. You will return home relaxed and calm from a week of pampering and luxury instead of stressed to the max from a long flight. The choice is yours, spend you days and nights in a luxurious room, enjoying delicious meals on a cruise ship of your preference, and you will truly enjoy your getaway to the paradise of the Hawaiian islands.

Australia’s Northern Territory is renowned for its colourful characters. A unique part of the most exciting continent on earth.

Australia’s Northern Territory is a land of swirling, near-phosphorescent, ochre dust, rocky mountain-high thunderclouds and sky-shattering storms – a region of pawpaw (papaya) and mango farms, pearl oyster meat from the pearling industry, farm-raised alligator and Thai spices. Indigenous people still dive for lily roots and burn the forests to trap game and make passage through the undergrowth possible. To journey through this land and taste it was one of the greatest privileges of my travel-writing life.

Equivalent in size to France, Italy and Spain combined, Australia’s Outback Northern Territory is bordered by Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia. A vibrant, developing economy, the Northern Territory has one-sixth of Australia’s land mass and just over one percent of the population, but with the youngest, wealthiest people in the nation. It has an environment that ebbs and flows with the seasons, of contrast and colour, where change is the only constant. Of awe inspiring iconic wonders – the World Heritage National Parks of Kakadu and Uluru-Kata Tjuta (Ayers Rock).

Darwin, the state’s capital, is so close to Asia that it’s much easier to head to Singapore than Sydney. Immigrants of every Asian culture have brought their foods and cooking traditions. At Darwin’s Hanuman, Thai Nonya cuisine meets Tandoor Indian: soak up the lemon grass and basil-flavoured sauce drenching the grilled rock oysters with warm naan bread. These are served in the trademark earthenware plates with little lids covering the oysters.

Australia’s Outback Northern Territory is renowned for its colourful characters. The type you’d meet at one of the legendary outback pubs, cattle stations or country towns. The gateway to Asia for the rest of Australia, or the window into the country for the rest of the world, the Northern Territory is a unique part of the most exciting continent on earth. It’s almost hard not to fall in love with its down to earth attitude.

When you think of warm water, lots of sun and seemingly endless beaches, what comes to mind? For many, it’s Hawaii. But there is more to do in Hawaii than sunbathe. Learn about the countless Hawaii adventures that you can have on your next visit to this beautiful paradise destination.

You can explore Hawaii on land, air or sea and take advantage of all the state has to offer.

For hikers, there are fabulous nature trails on every Hawaiian island, including treks for beginners and experts. On Maui, Haleakala is revered as one of the state’s best hiking spots. A favorite hike on Oahu is the 45-minute climb to the top of Diamond Head, where visitors are rewarded with sweeping views of Waikiki, Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean. On the Big Island, head to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and take on the Kilauea Iki Trail, a five-mile adventure that begins at the Thurston Lava Tube.

If hiking is not your thing, and you prefer to cycle your way around, fear not, there is plenty for you to do as well. Haleakala has a wonderful down hill route made for biking and Lanai has a place called the Garden of the Gods. This is a place that looks like the surface of the moon and has very colorful rocks and craters in the landscape.

Another popular way to see this island is horseback riding. One of the United States largest ranches, a sprawling 175,000 acres, Parker Ranch is on the Big Island where you can pretend you are a cowboy for the afternoon.

Skiing? In Hawaii? Yes, indeed. The summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island is usually blanketed with snow from late November through April. Only advanced skiers should attempt to brave these slopes, however.

The ocean provides many exciting recreational opportunities. Take a surfing lesson at Waikiki Beach, where gentle waves and shallow waters are perfect for novices. Snorkel at Hanauma Bay or go SCUBA diving at Cathedrals, located just off Lanai’s south shore. Hook a marlin or tuna on the deep waters off Kailua-Kona on the Big Island. Or head to Kauai and enjoy a kayaking trip along the breathtaking Napali Coast.

If you want to see the island from the sky, almost every one of the Hawaiian islands offer hang gliding lessons or helicopter rides. If you are a little more adventurous, you can go skydiving on Oahu. Here, a licensed instructor will jump out of the plane in tandem at 13,000 feet.

But that’s still not all. You can also enjoy camping, windsurfing, whale watching and more. This list just goes on and on. So when you are planning your next Hawaiian vacation, plan on doing something, rather than nothing.

In a spare, daydreamy moment, you decide to take a look at a map of the world. Since you have vacationing on your mind, your eyes fall upon an inviting string of islands in the South Pacific, and you lean in to take a closer look. The distinct land masses of Hawaii all look stunning, but for some reason one in particular has you hooked: Maui. Focus in a little further to discover a destination that will truly satisfy your cravings for a carefree getaway. Lahaina is a historic and lovely town that presides over one of Hawaii?s highlight isles, and will provide the perfect setting for the realization of your fantasy.

Lahaina is located on the western edge of Maui, an island with about 30 miles of beaches. The place is easily navigable by car and visitors usually end up exploring the hills, valleys and shoreline throughout their stay, but it?s nice to have a home base for your wanderings that will provide plenty of stimulation without having to fill up the gas tank and check out a map. Lahaina is perfect for giving your Hawaii vacation a more intimate feel, and you surely won?t regret making it the spotlight of your holiday.

Mauna Kahalawai (a mountain range) majestically oversees this region of the island and quietly explains why the Polynesians found this to be a worthy spot to settle in. The Lahaina Heritage Museum makes a good first visit (alright, after quick walk on the beach) and will acquaint you with the influences of the region?s colorful and industrious residents from yesterday and today. Take a look at a narrative that includes farming, whaling, and impressive ocean traveling in this historic building in the heart of Lahaina.

After you?ve nourished your brain and become familiar with the area, it?ll be time to have some fun. Hit the beach for a snorkeling session, hop on a surfboard, swim with the dolphins, or take in the landscape from above via parasail. All the typical Hawaii adventures will be at your doorstep, so check out the offerings and make a list of your favorites. Few people are lucky enough to spend enough time here to do it all, so if you?re only here for a week or so you?ll have to prioritize.

One activity that should definitely make the list is an event unique to Lahaina. It has been written up in a number of publications and exists as a famous tourist attraction that tends to please everyone. The Old Lahaina Luau consists of traditional cuisine, dancing, music and crafts, and offers the most authentic experience on the island. For a couple of hours, relish the fact that you?ve stumbled upon another world that resembles nothing you?ve ever seen before, one that will affect your world view from here on out.

Front Street is another site that can?t be missed. This bustling thoroughfare is the place to find shops, restaurants and tourists galore, and despite its frequent crowds it still feels pretty laid-back. Get your souvenir shopping done or enjoy a mai-tai as your fellow tourists flow by, and prepare yourself for the next enthralling activity of the day.

Between sampling the fresh seafood and standing in awe of the humongous banyan trees that line the streets downtown, not to mention all the time you?ll spend soaking in the fun and sun of the beach, your Lahaina trip will surely exceed the expectations you have as you sit there staring at the one-dimensional map on the wall.

To bring it to life even further, picture yourself nestled into a vacation rental. Hotels are plentiful here, but private beach houses will make the holiday a little more special by giving you and your companions the space and amenities you need to truly live it up. Why come all the way to this island in the sea only to settle for less than stellar accommodations. Go online to peruse the Lahaina Vacation Rentals and pick one that excites you. Nothing is better than making your daydreams become realities, so get started as soon as you can.

Visit HomeAway.com for all your vacation rental needs.
